Could Daily Wine Consumption Be Heart-Healthy?

“One should not assume wine consumption is a healthy habit,” explains a heart specialist. Drinking alcohol is connected to high blood pressure, liver disease, and issues with digestion, mental well-being, and immunity, as well as various cancers.

Possible Cardiovascular Upsides

However, research indicates that drinking wine in moderation could have some small benefits for your heart health, according to experts. The findings indicate wine can help lower LDL cholesterol – which may lower the risk of cardiovascular disease, kidney problems and stroke.

Alcohol is not a cure. The notion that an unhealthy diet can be counteracted with wine is flawed.

This is due to compounds that have properties which dilate vessels and reduce swelling, aiding vessels in remaining dilated and supple. Furthermore, red wine possesses antioxidants such as the antioxidant resveratrol, found in the skin of grapes, which may further support cardiac well-being.

Significant Drawbacks and Cautions

However, significant warnings exist. A global health authority has published a statement reporting that no level of alcohol consumption is safe; the heart-related advantages of wine are eclipsed by it being a group 1 carcinogen, alongside asbestos and tobacco.

Other foods – such as berries and grapes provide comparable advantages to wine without those negative effects.

Guidance on Limited Intake

“I’d never encourage a non-drinker to start,” notes an expert. But it’s also unreasonable to anticipate everyone who currently drinks to stop entirely, stating: “The crucial factor is moderation. Be prudent. Beverages such as beer and liquor are laden with sugars and energy and can damage the liver.”

One suggestion is consuming no more than 20 small glasses of wine a month. A prominent cardiovascular organization recommends not drinking more than 14 weekly units of alcohol (equivalent to six average wine glasses).

The essential point is: Wine should not be viewed as a health supplement. Proper nutrition and positive life choices are the established cornerstones for sustained cardiovascular wellness.
