The former Brazilian leader has been detained after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under home confinement.

The ex-president was found guilty of orchestrating a government overthrow in the ninth month and handed more than 27 years in incarceration, but he was staying under home detention pending legal challenges.

High Court Judge the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments were revealed.

This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could facilitate a possible escape.

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a document approving the custody, the magistrate said data from the unit overseeing the former president's confinement suggested the former leader's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the confusion caused by the protest called by his child.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a meeting of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday night.

Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on online platforms on the previous day: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your settee? I call on you to battle with us."

He said the vigil would be so backers could "pray for his health and for the restoration of democratic rule in our land."

Foreign Shelter Risks

It was only on last Friday that the former president's lawyers asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that the former president be authorized to depart his residence for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for pulmonary infections and other illnesses.

Context of Sentencing

The former president was found guilty of leading a plot aimed at retaining his authority after he was defeated in the 2022 election to his left-wing rival, Lula.

High Court judges said that he had knowledge of a plot which involved plans to kill the current president and his VP candidate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill Justice Moraes - the Supreme Court justice who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.

The scheme was thwarted because it failed to get the endorsement of the military leaders. Lula was sworn in without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on the eighth of January, numerous his followers stormed and vandalised official structures in the federal district, Brasília.

The security forces intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.

The judges found that the demonstrators had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, bring back stability and bring him back to power.
